Its purpose is to remove 50-60Hz cycle hum \/ buzz associated with single coil pickups.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"0\" data-end=\"263\"><strong>For a dummy coil, the important value is not the DC resistance in k\u03a9, but the inductance in Henries.<\/strong> A coil can read high k\u03a9 and still work poorly if the inductance is wrong.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"265\" data-end=\"510\">The dummy coil should typically have an inductance equal to about 30\u201340% of the pickup.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"265\" data-end=\"510\">Since most F-style single coil pickups are around 2\u20134 H, a dummy coil around 0.8\u20131.4 H usually gives the best balance between hum canceling and preserving brightness and attack.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"512\" data-end=\"659\">Below that range, hum reduction becomes weak.
